While the foot crossbowmen were a common sight, the mounted variants added a layer of mobility, making them highly effective skirmishers and scouts.
These mounted units were often a part of the larger mercenary groups serving different Holy Roman Empire principalities and duchies. Their unique skill set made them instrumental in the numerous battles, skirmishes, and sieges that peppered the European landscape during
Mounted crossbowmen were primarily used for hit-and-run tactics and reconnaissance. Their mobility allowed them to harass enemy flanks, disrupt formations with volleys of bolts, and then retreat before any retaliatory charge. In sieges, they could patrol and monitor long stretches of walls or fortifications, keeping besieging forces at bay with their ranged attacks.
Their prowess was notably demonstrated during the various internal and external conflicts of the Holy Roman Empire, such as the Swabian War and the numerous campaigns during the Italian Wars. Their presence was also felt in the larger continental struggles, as German mercenary groups, including these crossbowmen, were highly sought after.
